Winter Riding & Winter Storage of your E-Bike
Colder weather is upon us and you may be wondering how to store your electric bike over the colder months — or maybe you want to keep riding and enjoying the beautiful outdoors. Here at Great Western E-Bikes we have the tips, tricks, and solutions to keep you confident about riding or storing your e-bike in the best possible condition.
Winter Storage
If you plan on not riding your electric bike for prolonged periods, especially during the Winter months, there are several best practices to protect your ride.
Clean Before Storing
— Thoroughly clean and dry your e-bike — remove all grit, grime, and dirt from every nook and cranny.
— Check that battery contacts are clean and dry to prevent corrosion.
— Lube the chain after cleaning — turn the pedals several times to circulate the lube through the chainring, cassette, and rear derailleur.
— Check tire pressure and inflate to the recommended PSI before storing.
Storing Your E-Bike
Your e-bike has electronic components sensitive to extreme temperatures and humidity. Store it in a cool, dry space — ideally between 32 and 75 degrees — away from humidity and extreme temperature fluctuations.
Storing Your Battery
The battery is often the most expensive component on an e-bike. Proper storage is critical to prolonging its life and charge capacity.
Battery Storage Tips
— Store in a cool, dry place — ideally inside the house, away from harsh environments.
— Do not store fully charged. Most manufacturers recommend storing within a range of 50%–70%. Check your owner's manual for your specific battery.
— Check battery level every few weeks. Don't let it drop below 40% without recharging to the recommended storage level.
— Never leave the battery plugged into the charger for more than 4–8 hours, and never store it plugged in.
After Winter Storage
After storing your e-bike for the Winter, we recommend bringing it to Great Western E-Bikes for a professional safety check and tune-up. We will clean, inspect, and lube your bike; check and adjust brakes and gears; inspect brake pads, chain, wheel alignment, and tires; and update software for the display, battery, and motor — so you start the new season with a perfectly functioning, safe ride.
Winter Riding Tips & Tricks
A lot of our customers ride all year long — using their e-bikes as commuters, for leisure, or even on snowy trails. Here's how to ride safely and confidently in colder, wetter conditions.
Keep It Clean
Wipe down and dry your e-bike after every ride — especially important in winter when mud and moisture accumulate. This helps prevent rust and corrosion.
Battery in the Cold
Optimal battery efficiency is around 72°F. Cold reduces your range, so charge at room temperature before riding. A battery sock or cover helps keep it warm while out.
Braking & Stopping
Wet and icy surfaces dramatically affect stopping distance. Ride more cautiously and give yourself extra braking time. Keep brake pads, calipers, and lines properly serviced.
Tires & Pressure
Consider winter tires with more aggressive tread. Lower your PSI by 10–20% for a larger contact point in wet or icy conditions. Let the bike acclimate to temperature before adjusting.
Layer Up
Wear many thin layers you can shed and add as needed — rather than a few bulky ones. A warm base layer plus a bright, lightweight rain jacket is ideal for winter riding.
Be Seen — Be Safe
More lights, the better — flashing front and rear lights are essential. Helmet lights, reflectors on tires, and bright outerwear all help ensure you're visible day or night.
Bike Essentials for Winter Riding
— Fenders — protect both bike and rider from mud, water, and road debris, keeping you cleaner and your eyes on the road.
— Repair kit & tools — staying warm in the cold is critical. Carry a multi-tool with chain breaker, spare tube, tire levers, pump or CO2, and a small first aid kit.
— Lights — bright beam lights to illuminate the road ahead, plus flashing lights to be seen by other road users. Helmet lights are a great addition.
Ride Safe
Some days just aren't appropriate for riding — understand your skill level and weather conditions, and make the wise decision for your safety. Riding with a partner is always a great idea for both safety and fun.
